We take a look at England's profile ahead of their opening game against Russia in the Euro 2016

England head to France as one of the favorites to win Euro 2016. Although they have never won this tournament before, their recent performance and the introduction of fresh, talented players gives them a glimmer of hope. Here is everything you need to know about the Three Lions:

England’s UEFA Euro history

England participated in Euro 1968 and finished third. Thereafter, they did not qualify for the tournament until 1980 where they finished fifth out of eight teams. They played three games, won one, lost one and drew one. Again, they failed to qualify until 1988 and appeared again in 1992. They finished 7th on both occasions. In 1996, they hosted the tournament and finished third out of 16 teams.

This was the first time the UEFA European Championship had 16 teams participating. In 2000, they reached the group stage and then upped their game in 2004 in Portugal, as they reached the quarters. In 2014, they reached the quarter-finals but finished fifth out of 16. The Three Lions will be hoping to win this tournament for the first time in their history as they head to France with a host of talents such as the likes of Harry Kane, Dele Alli, Marcus Rashford, Jamie Vardy, John Stones, and their all-time goal scorer Wayne Rooney (51 goals). Roy Hodgson's men sit at the 10th position in the FIFA rankings, as of May 2016.

Recent form

In 2015, the Englishmen played a total of 10 international matches. Out of the 10, they won seven, drew two and lost only one. Their most notable win was 2-0 against Euro 2016 hosts France in November 2015. So far in 2016, they have played two international matches which include the thrilling 3-2 win over Germany and the 2-1 loss to the Netherlands.

Manager’s profile

Roy Hodgson (below) is the manager of the England national football team.Roy Hodgson

He took over the Three Lions in May 2012 and beat Norway 1-0 in an international friendly in his first game in charge. He also beat Belgium 1-0 in his second friendly game, but drew 1-1 against France in his first competitive game. He then beat Sweden 3-2, their first ever competitive victory over the Swedes. Since then, the 68-year-old has overseen 49 matches as England manager, won 29, drew 13 and lost seven.
