Liverpool's full-back Alberto Moreno had to face his former side Sevilla in the much-anticipated Europa League final, but it was a night to forget for the Spanish international after his horror show at the back.

Jurgen Klopp looked on course to claim his first ever title with the Reds after Daniel Sturridge netted a stunning goal in the 35th minute, but the second half proved things to be different, as La Liga side defeated the English team 3-1.

After the match, criticism began to pour down on Moreno due to his incapability to defend well in the back, as he was blamed for the tragic defeat. However, former Liverpool star Danny Murphy has defended the youngster after his performance and believes Wednesday’s loss was a collective team failure, and not an individual one, telling the Colin Murray show:

“We know Moreno isn’t the best defensively, but he’s a young player playing against his old team – it was a difficult night for him."

“He got nutmegged, he had a bad header and he got done, but those two small mistakes wasn’t the reason Liverpool lost, let’s make that perfectly clear."

"I think it’s unfair for fans to start saying ‘he’s useless’ add ‘he’s cost us the game’ - No he didn’t!"

“He had a small impact on the result, of course he did, and he’s got to work on his defending, but too many other players didn’t stand up to be counted."

“Only three or four players, max, played to about 7/10 of their potential. Daniel Sturridge scored a wonderful goal, Simon Mignolet made some top saves and Kolo Toure was immense. I thought Emre Can did alright, but too many underperformed.”"

Nonetheless, the Reds have lost their chances of clinching on to European glory, as Sevilla stole the show for the third consecutive time in this competition.
