The USA will be hosting the Copa América Centenario this summer, giving the USMNT the chance to test their skills against some of South America's biggest teams. Here's all you need to know about the Stars & Stripes ahead of the tournament.

In less than a month, the USMNT will be taking part in their third major tournament in just three years. This time, it will be the Copa América Centenario, and for the first time ever it will be taking place outside South America. With the World Cup coming up in two years' time, this will give the Stars and Stripes a perfect opportunity to mix it up with some of the world's best teams to best prepare for the big event in Russia.

USMNT's Copa América record

Although the USA has been invited to numerous Copa América tournaments, they oftentimes opted not to participate due to conflicts with Major League Soccer. To date, the USMNT has participated in three Copa América competitions, in 1993, 1995, and 2007. Their best ever performance was in 1995, when they finished in fourth place; in 1993 and 2007, they ended up bowing out during the group stages.

As the hosts of the Copa América Centenario, the USMNT secured their spot automatically, and will be certainly hoping to do much better this time around.

USMNT's current form

The past 12 months have been a very interesting one indeed for the USMNT. Last summer started off well enough, with impressive results in friendlies against teams like the Netherlands and Germany. However, the Gold Cup, which they won in 2013, was quite disappointing, to say the least. They were shocked by Jamaica in the semi-finals and were not even able to secure third place against Panama in the consolation third-place match.

They have since experienced mixed results in friendlies and 2018 World Cup qualifiers have been not as smooth as they have expected, but recently the Stars and Stripes rebounded from a shock 2-0 loss to Guatemala by thrashing the same opponent 4-0 at the end of March.

In terms of rankings, the USMNT are presently 29th in the world as per FIFA and 3rd in CONCACAF.

The man on the tactician's bench

Former striker Jürgen Klinsmann has been in charge of the USMNT since 2011. Prior to that, the German tactician managed Bayern Munich, where he also spent two seasons as a player back in the mid '90's, and first began his managerial career with die Mannschaft in 2004.

In 2013, he clinched the Gold Cup with the USMNT, and in the next year, guided the Stars and Stripes to the last 16 of the World Cup. However, in 2015, he was unable to replicate the same success at the Gold Cup as the team ended up finishing in a disappointing fourth spot.

This will be Klinsmann's first ever Copa América tournament, and after the disaster at last summer's Gold Cup, he will be certainly eager to redeem himself especially since the tournament will be contested on the USMNT's home turf.

Klinsmann will be coaching the USMNT at a Copa América tournament for the first time this summer

USMNT's Copa América Centenario roster

Klinsmann had initially called up 40 players for his preliminary squad that will be trimmed down to 23 within the next few days. However one key player unfortunately will not be among these to make the cut. Jozy Altidore has recently suffered another injury setback - this time, a hamstring injury - that could cause him to miss out on this summer's Copa América Centenario.

Here is the final 23-man squad selected by Klinsmann:

Goalkeepers: Tim Howard (Everton), Ethan Horvath (Molde), Brad Guzan (Aston Villa)

Defenders: Michael Orozco (Club Tijuana), DeAndre Yedlin (Sunderland), Steve Birnbaum (D.C. United), John Brooks (Hertha Berlin), Geoff Cameron (Stoke City), Timmy Chandler (Eintracht Frankfurt), Matt Besler (Sporting Kansas City)

Midfielders: Michael Bradley (Toronto FC), Fabian Johnson (Borussia Monchengladbach), Jermaine Jones (Colorado Rapids), Perry Kitchen (Heart of Midlothian), Darlington Nagbe (Portland Timbers), Kyle Beckerman (Real Salt Lake), Graham Zusi (Sporting Kansas City), Christian Pulisic (Borussia Dortmund), Alejandro Bedoya (Nantes)
