Uruguay's Copa América record
Uruguay, one of South American biggest footballing nation, heads into the latest edition of Copa America looking to lift the crown yet another time, albeit this title won’t necessarily go down in the record books. They are the tournament’s most successful side, having clinched the title 15 times, but were knocked out to eventual champions Chile in 2015 after a controversial fingering incident involving Cavani and Jara.
Their exit from the latest Copa America easily summed up the roller coaster year that Oscar Tabarez’s crew endured, as they enjoyed the unforgettable wins – smashing both Colombia and Chile (revenge?) 3-0 and beating Brazil 1-0 a year back – whilst also falling to disappointing defeats to Costa Rica, Ecuador and Mexico.
Uruguay's current form
Regardless, the two-time World Cup winners still sit in a respectable 9th spot in FIFA's recent world rankings, released in May, but trail Argentina, Chile, Colombia, and Brazil in their continental football federation CONMEBOL's standings.
Who is Uruguay's coach?
Nonetheless, Oscar Tabarez remains the man to lead La Celeste, aided by a fairytale return of superstar Luis Suarez from his international ban. Copa America Centenario will hand the Uruguayan boss and former player’s chance of becoming the fourth-highest manager with most number of Copa America matches under his belt (23 games).
The former Boca Juniors boss has held his position as manager of the national side for 10 years now, having been appointed as boss back in 2006, winning the Copa America back in 2011. However, that is the only piece of silverware in Tabarez's second spell with Uruguay, with his team's 4th place finish in the 2010 World Cup also a highlight.
