By virtue of winning the 2014 Copa Centroamericana, Costa Rica is one of the six CONCACAF teams that will participate in this year’s edition of the Copa America Centenario. They will be joined by other five invitees, namely the United States, Mexico, Jamaica, Haiti and Panama. Interestingly, this is not the first time La Sele are participating in this tournament. Here is a brief history of their participation.
Costa Rica’s Copa America history
The Costa Ricans first participated in this tournament in 1997, where they failed to register a single win out of three matches played. They lost two, drew one, and conceded 10 goals in the process. Their next participation was in 2001 and 2004 where they finished 5th and 7th respectively. In 2011, they played in the group stage of the tournament and finished 9th after winning two and losing one of their three matches. This year’s edition will be their first appearance since 2011.
Recent form
In 2015, Los Ticos played a total of 16 international matches, including friendlies. Out of the 16, they won five, lost six and drawn five. In 2016, they have only played three international matches; two of them were 2018 World Cup Qualifiers against Jamaica both home and away. They drew the first leg 1-1 and won 3-0 at home in the reverse fixture. The other fixture was a friendly match against Venezuela in Barinas, where they lost by a solitary goal. In FIFA World Rankings, the Central American nation sits at the 25th position with 829 points.
Manager’s profile
Former Costa Rica international Oscar Ramirez is the head coach of the country’s national football team. In his career as a player for the national team, he made 75 appearances and scored six goals in the process. He was named the manager of the country’s team on August 18, 2015. Prior to that, he had worked under Hernan Medford as the assistant coach of Costa Rica from 2006 to 2008.
