Under the guidance of former Benfica boss Jorge Jesus, Sporting CP are in contention to finally end their long wait. The Lions have not won the Primeira Liga title since the 2001/2002 season, and for over a decade, have had to sit back and watch as Benfica, and to some extent Porto, have dominated the title race.
Sporting CP have already gotten the upper hand over Benfica this season. First was in the Portuguese Super Cup back in August, which earned Jorge Jesus his first trophy with his new club. Then was an October clash in the Primeira Liga, in which they cruised to a 3-0 win at Benfica's home ground. And finally, there was a hard-fought 2-1 victory in November, during the fourth round of this season's Taca de Portugal.
But there have also been disappointments. Ironically perhaps, Sporting CP's last league defeat was against Benfica. This was on March 5th, when the Eagles showed up on their home turf and edged them out 1-0.

After that, it's been relatively smooth sailing. Eight straight wins have made sure that they keep up the pressure on the reigning champions. Next up will be their final match of the 2015/2016 Primeira Liga season, a must-win game against Sporting Braga.
Sporting Braga have already secured fourth spot, and as a result, a Europa League place. Win, lose, or draw, their position in the league table will not improve or get any worse. For Sporting CP, not only must they win, but they also will need Nacional to do them a huge favor and deny Benfica a victory.
For those who enjoy Portuguese football, this Sunday certainly will be a dramatic one. Will Jorge Jesus be able to win yet another Primeira Liga title - but this time with Sporting CP?
