With two spots in the 2016/2017 Premier League already being sealed by Burnley and Middlesbrough, there is only one left for another Championship side. Over the next few weeks teams - Sheffield Wednesday, Brighton, Derby County, and Hull City - will be all vying for a chance to feature in English football's top flight. And at the end of it all, only one will have that opportunity. Who will it be?
Derby County
This season has been quite a roller coaster for Derby County. It took until matchday six for the Rams to finally win their first match, when they defeated Preston North End 2-1 on September 12th. All appeared to be smooth sailing until midway through the campaign, when the team hit another rough patch that eventually cost Paul Clement his job.
Darren Wassall's arrival appeared to have righted the turbulent ship as the team managed to salvage a fifth-placed finish to round out the season. The absence of key player George Thorne - who broke his leg during the team's 1-0 loss against Ipswich Town - will be keenly felt by the hosts. And although they have won four out of their past six home matches, they have not won their past two, including the most recent defeat versus Ipswich.
So far, the Rams have enjoyed success against upcoming opponents Hull City this season. In fact, despite sitting behind the Tigers in the league table, they did manage to beat them both home and away, all whilst outscoring them six to nil on aggregate. Furthermore, Derby have been pretty solid at home as of late, and have conceded just four goals in their past nine games at the iPro Stadium.
Hull City
Steve Bruce's Hull City concluded this season in fourth spot and earned a solid 83 points. The Tigers did suffer their own mini-crisis in March and April, when they failed to win a single league game in March, but their home form was by far one of the best in the division, with just one defeat. In fact, were it not for their disappointing away performance (ten losses and four draws) Hull City certainly would have finished higher in the league table.
Given that they have lost eight out of their last 14 road games, Hull City fans do have quite a bit to be concerned about heading into this match. Furthermore, as noted before, the Tigers did lose both of their prior ties with Derby County and have failed to score in four out of their six past away games.
Still, they will be coming into this game having cruised to a comfortable 5-1 victory over Rotherham United. Furthermore, although their 4-0 defeat to Derby County last month was their worst loss this season, Hull City do have the slightly better historic head-to-head record against the Rams.
Out of their past 12 meetings in the Championship, Hull City have won six, lost four and drawn twice.
