The Portuguese was substituted off the pitch in Wednesday’s win over Villarreal, putting him in doubt for the Man City clash.

Real Madrid fans were made to sweat over the fitness of star attacker Cristiano Ronaldo after he was substituted off with a visible injury during the 3-0 win over Villarreal on Wednesday.

The Portuguese superstar left the pitch clutching the back of his right-leg during the mid-week game, though the club and player himself were quick to cool down fears of a long-term absence.

However, after further tests to determine his injury revealed that the former Man United winger suffered a thigh strain, but the club are unsure as to how long the player’s muscle damage will keep him sidelined.

All good. Thanks for your support

"After the medical examinations conducted today [Friday] on our player, Cristiano Ronaldo, a the Hospital Universitario Sanitas La Moraleja, he has been diagnosed with a muscle strain in his right thigh," an official statement read.

After appearing to be headed for another trophy-less season, Zinedine Zidane’s boys find themselves fighting on two fronts for silverware – in La Liga and the Champions League – and will thus be keen to welcome back the league’s top-scorer.

With 31 goals to his name in La Liga this campaign, the 31-year-old is expected to be rested for Saturday’s trip to Rayo Vallecano in the Spanish Primera Division.

Unfortunately for the 10-time Champions League winners, the three-time Ballon d’Or winner is now a doubt for the first leg of Les Merengues’ European semi-final clash with Man City, due to be played at the Etihad Stadium on Tuesday.

Cristiano is also the leading scorer this term in the Champions League with 16 goals, one off the record he holds in the coveted competition.
