Barcelona's Camp Nou is set to undergo a major face lift for a period of five years.

Barcelona have unveiled the new face of Nou Camp. Constructions for the proposed uplift will begin in 2017 and could be opened for public use in the 2021/22 season. Part of the construction work will include expanding the capacity of the stadium to accommodate over 100,000 spectators. The unveiling ceremony was graced by Barca's first team squad, including the first four captains; Andres Iniesta, Lionel Messi,  Sergio Busquets and Javier Mascherano.

Barcelona president Jose Maria Bartomeu was also present at Nou Camp during the official unveiling of the proposed project, which he described as an ''icon for the city’’ when completed.

He said:

"We are proud to present the winning proposal for the new Camp Nou

"Many submissions were from the best architectural firms in the world. I want to thank all of them.

"I want to thank the work of the jury as well. They put in an awful lot of hours. It's been a job well done.

"Other clubs have built better and more modern stadiums, with new technologies. This is why there have been projects in the last 20 years to improve Camp Nou, though for different reasons these could not move forward.’’

Here is an animated video of the proposed facelift:

He added:

"Forty per cent of Camp Nou has not been touched since it was built. A club such as ours should have the best arena in the world. I believe this new Camp Nou will be an icon for the city, one of the most beautiful cities in the world."

He also confirmed that for the project to be successful, Barca will have to look for possible naming rights and reduce their debts to projected levels. With a seating capacity of 99,000, the Nou Camp is one of the largest stadiums in the world, and the largest in Spain. Here are some images of the proposed facelift:
