They suffered an early scare when Vitoria Setubal took the lead within the opening minutes of their match this past Monday. However, Benfica showed why they are Portugal's most decorated club as they fought their way back to secure a 2-1 victory and re-claim their spot on top of the Primeira Liga table.
With just four games remaining, the race between Rui Vitoria's side, who are the reigning Primeira Liga champions, and Sporting CP, who are being led by ex-Benfica boss Jorge Jesus, could not be any more closer. Just two points divide the Eagles and the Lions, and any potential slip-up from these two rivals could prove to be the deciding factor between who is crowned champions of Portugal and who will have to settle for a runners-up spot this May.
Benfica will come into this game already knowing the outcome of their title rivals' result from their own fixture. Sporting CP will be in action on Saturday, so if the Lions win that match, the Eagles will obviously have to pick up all three points against Rio Ave to again maintain their two point lead. However, should Sporting CP lose and Benfica win, then Vitoria's side will extend their advantage to a much-more comfortable five points with three games to go.
Meanwhile, Rio Ave, who finished in 10th last season are just on the cusp of potentially securing European football for the next term. Should they manage to do so, it would mark the second time the team, nicknamed, "Rio Grande" (Big River) feature in continental competition. Their first appearance, of course was during the 2014/2016 season after making an impressive run all the way to the 2014 Portuguese Cup final, in which they lost 1-0 to Benfica.
Despite enduring a frustrating overall historical record against Benfica, Rio Ave have managed to frustrate the Eagles in the recent past. In fact, Benfica fans will likely be viewing this match with some trepidation. This same tie last season ended as a 2-1 win for Rio Ave, in which Benfica had a man sent off. Whilst that was not enough to derail their title challenge, this time around, they are not enjoying the same kind of comfortable lead they have had in past seasons.
So, will Benfica make it a ninth straight league game sans defeat? Or will Rio Ave again thwart them yet again at their home ground?
