The battle of the titans in Spanish football is back this Wednesday as Atletico Madrid take on rivals Barcelona in the quarter-final of the UEFA Champions League. LSTV brings you everything you need to know about this fixture.

Barcelona come into this match with an added advantage, having won the first leg fixture 2-1 at the Camp Nou, albeit controversially. Some Atletico Madrid players questioned the level of officiating in the high-tempered match, but at the end of the night, the Catalan giants emerged the winner in a match where the centre referee seemed to dish out yellow cards like confetti. The most notable incident was the sending off of Fernando Torres,  a few moments after he scored his opening goal for the visitors.

To overturn the scoreline, the hosts now need to win by two clear goals and avoid conceding. This will not be an easy achievement considering the fact that the Blaugrana are coming into this fixture with their reputation at stake after going down 1-0 to Real Sociedad last weekend.

Since their defeat in El Clasico, Barcelona seem to be a pale shadow of their previous unbeaten self. They are now conceding quite easy goals, something that has been their major undoing in their most recent games. To make things even worse for Luis Enrique’s men, the lethal Lionel Messi seems to have taken a break from scoring and now patrols the pitch, looking more of a referee than the Leo every defence in the world used to be scared of. The Argentine has now gone 362 minutes without a goal and all eyes will be on him if he features today against Diego Simeone’s men.

Interestingly, the 28-year-old is still hunting for his 500th career goal and one would expect that this would be a good reason for him to up his game and cause more problems to his opponents. But things have not been working for La Pulga lately, and he urgently needs to revive his former self to ensure Barca successfully defends the La Liga and Champions League titles.

Lucky enough for the Camp Nou outfit, they have won their last seven games against Atletico Madrid in all competitions and are looking forward to extending the winning run on Wednesday. The visitors have also won seven of their last 8 Champions League games, and scored at least twice in each of those seven games.

Los Colchoneros, on the other hand, have seen over 2.5 goals against Barca in all competitions, while the latter have netted at least twice against Atletico in all competitions.

Team news:

Atletico Madrid

Fernando Torres is set to miss this match following his suspension in the first leg. As a result, Antoine Griezmann is expected to lead the attack. Gimenez is also doubtful for this clash while Oliver Torres risks facing a UCL ban if he gets his next booking.

Barcelona

Rafinha could miss this fixture due to a hamstring problem, but Luis Suarez is expected to return after missing the Real Sociedad game. Both Javier Macherano and Sergio Busquets need one more booking to face a ban. Messi is also expected to start as he continues with the hunt for his 500th career goal.
