Although many of the world’s major leagues are on hiatus this weekend for the international break, across the pond in the United States, MLS will still be in action – albeit at a reduced capacity, with just three games taking place between Saturday and Sunday. One of those matches will be a clash between NYC FC and New England Revolution, and both teams will be desperate to rebound after disappointing results in their last matches.
NYC FC
Patrick Vieira’s men will be coming into this game having suffered a disappointing 1-0 reversal to Orlando City last weekend. The defeat - which is NYC FC’s first since the start of this season – would have felt even more frustrating due to the fact that they largely dominated the game, but were unable to make their possession count.
However, as fans have seen time and time again in football, possession means nothing if a team cannot finish their chances, and their profligacy in the final third came back to haunt them as the Lions snatched an early goal through in-form striker Cyle Larin and hung on for a much needed win.
Vieira will have to make do without a slew of players due to international commitments and injuries. For starters, Mix Diskerud and Ronald Matarrita are both away with the USMNT and Costa Rica, and Jack Harrison, RJ Allen and Connor Brandt are still on the treatment table. Veteran midfielder Frank Lampard is still in doubt and may not be able to feature.
New England Revolution
Meanwhile, the Revolution will also be coming into this game having suffered a loss in their most recent fixture. Jay Heaps’s side are still without a win so far in 2016, and will be desperate to avoid making it a fourth league game sans picking up all three points; the last time they went four games without a win was back in 2001, when they lost all of their opening quartet of matches.
Like NYC FC, New England Revolution are also missing some players due to the international break as well as injuries. Key playmaker Lee Nguyen is currently on duty with the USMNT, as is Je-Vaughn Watson, who is away with Jamaica. Charlie Davies is another who has been struggling with a hamstring problem and may not be able to participate for this match.
Heaps will also hope that his men will be able to keep cooler heads in what will be a tense derby clash. Against Philadelphia, they not only had to play with ten men for the majority of the match but also conceded two spot-kicks – something that they naturally cannot afford to have happen if they want to have any chance at clinching their first win of the nascent MLS campaign.
