Louis Van Gaal been handed a huge boost as two of their defensive players could be available for selection in the Manchester Derby.

The Red Devils travel to the Etihad Stadium on Sunday to face their city rivals Manchester City in a crucial match that could either rebuild or destroy their already-slim hopes of securing a top-four finish by the end of the season. The Old Trafford outfit will, however, be without their key striker and captain Wayne Rooney who is nursing a knee injury.

According to the Mirror, manager Louis Van Gaal could welcome his key defenders Guillermo Varela and Marcos Rojo to the starting line-up against the Citizens. The defensive duo were substituted last Thursday during Man Utd’s 1-1 draw with rivals Liverpool at Old Trafford as the hosts crashed out of the European tournament.

Marcos Rojo has undergone serious injury problems since joining Man United from Sporting Lisbon in August 2014. So far this season, the Argentine has only made nine league appearances for the English club due to a shoulder problem.

However, Antonio Valencia could return at the right-back against Manuel Pellegrini’s side after undergoing a successful ankle surgery. Also, Ander Herrera could pass a late fitness test ahead of the Etihad trip after missing the Liverpool game.

The Red Devils need nothing less than a win to bridge the four-point gap between them and fourth-placed City, who are also in strong contention for a spot in next year’s Champions League.
