After 210 minutes and sixteen shots from the spot, Atletico Madrid managed to eliminate some tough Dutch opposition. Diego Simeone's men made it into the tournament's history, becoming the first side ever to make it to the Champions League Quarter finals without scoring a goal in the previous round.
PSV Eindhoven opened up the shootout, and even though the odds were in their favor (63% of the teams taking the first penalty had made it to the next round), a shot to the crossbar by Luciano Narsingh sealed their fate against the ever-complicated Spanish team, who lacked the consistency and accuracy of old and took things to the last mile.
Atlético Madrid made it to the Quarter final stage of the tournament exactly the same way they did last year. Prior to last season's matchup against Real Madrid, Los Colchoneros eliminated Bayer Leverkusen after a heart-breaking shootout. Curiously enough, that game took place on March 17th, hinting that Simeone's men have some sort of lucky charm when it comes to deciding Champions League ties this way.

Atletico have conceded one goal in their last EIGHT games. That's not a team you want to play in a two-legged quarter-final.

That. Is. Ridiculous.
Almost exactly a year ago (March 17th, 2015), Atlético beat Bayer Leverkusen on penalties here in the last 16. Omen? #Atleti #AtletiPSV #UCL

Going 180 without goals and then scoring all of your penalties in a shootout is such an Atlético thing to do.

For me, doesn't matter if I have ZERO rooting interest: a #UEFAChampionsLeague shootout always gets pulse up. Great one now: #AtletiPSV
