Wolfsburg are hoping to reach the Champions League quarter-finals for the first time in their history when they host Belgian side Gent at the Volkswagen Stadium.

The German outfit come into this fixture with an added advantage, having won the first-leg tie 3-2 in Belgium.

In the first leg, The Wolves were on the course of winning by a 3-0 score line at the Ghelamco Arena but goals from Sven Kums and Khalifa Coulibaly reduced the win to 3-2 in the last ten minutes of the game. This demonstrated the fighting spirit of the Belgian side and they could decide to continue from where they left when they play Dieter Hecking’s men away from home.

Maybe if The Buffalos had more time in the first leg, they could have overturned the results. But all is not yet over for them; they could decide to surprise the hosts with quick goals and sit back to defend their lead to the end of the game.

Things will not be that easy for Wolfsburg either; they need at least a draw of any kind or avoid defeat of more than one goal. Currently sitting at the seventh spot in the Bundesliga, Wolfsburg have only been defeated once in their last five league games. Before that, they had not won a match in their previous seven games, a clear indication of their recent resurgence.

They have also scored at least one goal in 12 of their last 13 matches. In fact, the last time they failed to score was during the 2-0 loss to Bundesliga giants Bayern Munich. They then bounced back to beat Gent 3-2 a week later.

On the other hand, from the domestic perspective, Gent squandered a glorious chance of rising to the top of the league table having dropped crucial points to give way to their rivals Brugge, who are the current league leaders. They lost twice and drew once in their last five domestic games, something that sent them two points below the league leaders.

Team news

Wolfsburg

The hosts will play without Sebastian Jung, Paul Seguin, Bas Dost and Naldo due to injuries. Diego Benaglio and Nicklas Bendtner are also doubtful for this fixture due to injury concerns. As a result, Julian Draxler is expected to lead the hunt for goals up-front as Hecking maintains the same squad that beat Borussia Monchengladbach last weekend.

Gent

Both Peter Olayinka, Hannes Van Der Bruggen and Gustav Wikheim are unavailable for this match due to injuries. Therefore, coach Hein Vanhaezebrouck is expected to field the same side that faced The Wolves a fortnight ago
