Lionel Messi and Luis Suarez’s antics in Barcelona’s 6-1 thrashing of Celta Vigo lit social media and the headlines when the duo combined to score a penalty pass, also known as the “Cruyff” penalty, in the Camp Nou victory.
So it comes as little surprise that other players across the globe would soon try and copy the Blaugrana attackers.
This did occur in Africa, with a Zimbabwean side attempting to emulate the brilliant – some may call it disrespectful – spot kick, but failed miserably.
In a clash between Dynamos FC and WhaWha, which the latter lost 4-0, Dynamos were awarded a penalty late in the game, with Roderick Mutuma looking to tee up the ball for team-mate Valentine Ndaba to bury.
But why did it prove unsuccessful? The WhaWha defenders most probably watched the Barca vs Celta Vigo game, as they anticipated the penalty pass.
