Earlier this month, Daily Mail reported that English Premier League giants Chelsea had identified Napoli hitman Gonzalo Higuain as an ideal candidate to help the Blues’ attack in an attempt to return to the top of European football.
Interim boss Guus Hiddink held serious interest and was plotting an offer in-excess to £40m in order to land the in-form Argentine, but the player turned down the London giants as there was no guarantee that he would be first-choice striker ahead of Diego Costa.
Although Chelsea eventually opted for Alexandre Pato, a return back for Higuain was not out of the question given his goalscoring exploits this campaign, but any hopes of signing the former Real Madrid man has now been dashed by recent comments made by his brother and agent.
Speaking to Radio Kiss Kiss Napoli, as per the Daily Mail, the player’s brother underlined Gonzalo’s desire to fulfill his contract with Serie A’s second-placed team, insisting that there’s “no chance” he’ll be playing anywhere but the Stadio San Paolo.
“We have a contract and there's no chance of playing elsewhere,” Higuain’s brother told the Italian radio station.
“But we can't think about [qualification for] the Champions League now, but just about playing every game.
“There are still many points to play for. When Gonzalo plays it's normal that there's a high chance of scoring goals, he's having a great season.”
Although this will come as a blow to several interested parties, it will come as a huge boost to Napoli, currently on a two-game losing streak, as the Argentine’s 26 goals in 31 appearances this season – 79 since arriving from Real Madrid – has helped Maurizio Sarri’s side mount a serious push for the league crown.
