It is always unpleasant to lose. It is even more frustrating during a derby clash with one's cross-town rival, where it's more than just three points at stake. Well, Inter Milan finds themselves in this unfortunate position after being trounced 3-0 by AC Milan during last weekend's Derby della Madonnina and they will be keen on getting back on track against Chievo on Wednesday evening.
Inter Milan
The Nerazzurri have not won a league match since edging out Empoli 1-0 in their first game of 2016. Since then, things have gone shockingly awry for Roberto Mancini's side, who will be without their tactician after he was sent off for a rant during the tense game against AC Milan. Once boasting the best defensive record in the league, Inter now stands in second place, with 17 goals versus the 15 conceded by a recently resurgent Juventus side.
More worrying is the fact that they have not been able to keep a clean sheet since beating Napoli 2-0 in the Coppa Italia quarter-finals on January 19th; since then, they have shipped an alarming seven goals, including six alone in their past two matches across all competitions. Fans made their frustrations well-known after the defeat to the Rossoneri last weekend and will be expecting a big improvement from the squad against Chievo tomorrow evening.
Currently a point behind Fiorentina - who occupy the last Champions League spot - and more significant, seven and nine behind Juve and Napoli respectively, Inter's Scudetto chances are fading fast. Still, they will be facing the two Verona-based sides - Chievo and Hellas Verona - which will represent a good chance for them to pick up two much-needed wins, especially considering their history against their upcoming opponents.
The Nerazzurri have not lost to Chievo at the Stadio Giuseppe Meazza since December 2001, with eight wins and four draws since then. However, they did not find it exactly easy in their earlier meeting this season and beat them by a narrow 1-0 margin, and have earned the same number of points - five - as the Flying Donkeys in their last six mathes. Fortunately for the hosts, only Jonathan Biabiany will miss out due to the flu, meaning that they will have all options available for this must-win game.
Chievo
Meanwhile, Chievo will be also devoid of confidence after conceding eight goals in their past two games against Juventus and Lazio. The bad results might not have sent them automatically down to the relegation zone, but for a side whose goal is safety, Rolando Maran's side will be hoping to try to take advantage of Inter's difficult situation and nick a point.
Unfortunately for the visitors, they are going to be missing two key players: Alberto Paloschi and Riccardo Meggorini as the former was sold to Swansea and the latter is out injured. Additional absentees will include Alessandro Gamberini as well as Perparim Hetemaj, and veteran midfielder Simone Pepe is a doubt for this fixture.
