The Argentinean coach is the Blues' primary target to take over the team's coaching duties permanently, following Jose Mourinho's dismissal in December.

Hours after FIFA's transfer ban on Real Madrid and Atletico was announced, there is an English team that could benefit from Los Colchoneros' problems to add new players. Sources indicate that once the ban was revealed, coach Diego Simeone would be thinking about accepting Roman Abramovich's offer to join Chelsea on a long term deal, given that the Argentinean boss will have hi hands tied to make any new signings for a year.

Simeone has been tempted to join the current Premier League champions a number of times, but José Mourinho's dismissal as coach back in December forced the Blues to speed up the process. While Abramovich also wanted Guardiola to join his team, the Spanish coach seems to be closer to sign a deal with Manchester City, leaving Simeone as the top candidate for the job.

The former River Plate manager has transformed Atletico once again into a title contender, as he managed Los Colchoneros to their first La Liga trophy in almost twenty years back in the 2013-2014 season. That season saw the other team from Madrid playing the UEFA Champions League final for the second time ever, losing against Real Madrid in overtime.

Atletico Madrid currently sits at the top of the table, two points ahead of second place Barcelona, and four points away from their hated neighbours, Real Madrid.
