The hosts will be coming into this game having experienced the best possible start to 2016. First was a 2-0 win that not only ended Porto's unbeaten record - causing the dismissal of their opponents' manager - but also moved the to top of the table. This was then followed by yet another three points as they cruised to a comfortable 6-0 victory over Vitoria Setubal and as such currently enjoy a four point advantage over fellow title rivals Benfica and Porto, who sit in second and third respectively.
With just one loss in their past five league games, Sporting CP are in a rich vein of form. The arrival of ex-Benfica boss Jorge Jesus, who won countless accolades during a highly successful spell with the Lions' cross-town rivals, coupled with the team's excellent performances in the Primeira Liga this season have some fans dreaming of the team finally winning their first league title since the 2000/2001 season.
However, they will have to be wary of upcoming opponents Sporting Braga. Despite a 12 point lead over the Archbishops, Sporting CP's last meeting with them - which took place in December 2015- ended in defeat for the hosts as they were dumped out of the Taca de Portugal following a 4-3 loss in the fifth round. Nonetheless, this same fixture in the league last season finished as a 4-1 win in favor of the Lions and in the form that they are in since the start of the new year, they still look as the favorites to come out on top in Sunday's fixture.
Sporting Braga
Meanwhile, Sporting Braga have been pretty solid this season and sit just behind the "Big Three" in the table's rankings. However, they have not been able to string together back-to-back wins, and in fact, their last five games across all competition alternate between wins and draws. So, if one looks at this as some kind of pattern, then Braga, who won their last match 3-0, will be expected to draw - although, of course, football does not follow predictable patterns and there is the fact that they enjoyed success against Sporting CP in their most recent fixture.
Prior to beating them in the Taca de Portugal, Sporting Braga's last win (excluding friendlies) over the Lions was on January 15, 2012. However, the visitors are undefeated in their past six games on the road; incidentally, Sporting CP are also sans a loss in their last six games on home turf.
A win for Sporting CP will see them open up a seven point gap over title rivals Porto and Benfica - albeit temporarily - whilst Sporting Braga will hope to make it two back-to-back victories in their second meeting in less than one month.
