Zidane takes over as Real Madrid's coach

Florentino Perez fires Benitez and appoints Zinedine Zidane as new Real Madrid boss

January 4, 2016 By Oscar Rojas
The legendary French player will substitute Rafa Benitez as Los Blancos' manager, following a string of unsatisfying results and controversy on and off the pitch.

After days of rumors about who would be coaching Los Blancos for the rest of the season, Florentino Perez has surrendered and decided to sack Rafa Benitez as Real Madrid's head coach.

In a brief press conference, the team's president revealed the board's decision to the media, and unveiled Zinedine Zidane as the club's new coach.

"We have made the decision to end Rafa Benitez's contract with Real Madrid. We had the pleasure of working with a great professional and an even better human being. We will always be grateful for his efforts during the past few months," Pérez stated.

"The team's new coach will be Zinedine Zidane. He is, undoubtedly, one of football's greatest players of all time, and he knows better than anyone what it is to be a part of this team. He knows the player, how hot Real Madrid's coaching seat is, and there are just no impossibles for him," Pérez added.

After being unveiled as the team's new manager, the former Real Madrid Castilla boss shared his excitement with those in attendance.

"This is an important day for me. I'm more excited now than I was when I signed as a player. I am going to put my heart and soul into this job so that everything works out well," "Zizou" stated.

The former player was later joined on the stage by his family.

The news about Benitez facing the axe was celebrated by most Real Madrid fans all over the world. Here are some of their best comments via our pals from Football Daily.

Zidane's coaching staff will be revealed on Tuesday. Following the announcement, the former Ballon D'Or winner will prepare Los Blancos' next match against Deportivo this Saturday.
