The stadium was built in 1905 and redeveloped in the 1990's. The capacity would grow from 42,000 to 60,000 by the time the new stadium is built.

Stamford Bridge could be growing in the next few months as there are plans to remodel the stadium and increase its capacity in a short-term future from 42,000 to 60,000. This would make Chelsea's home venue one of the three biggest stadiums in England.

Currently, Manchester United's Stamford Bridge has the biggest stadium in the Premier League and it fits 72,000 spectators. Arsenal's Emirates Stadium also reached its maximum capacity when 60,000 fans go inside of it. Etihad Stadium holds 50,000 seats for fans and it is currently the third biggest soccer venue in the country.

Chelsea's current ground was built in 1905 and has been redeveloped a few times since then. The last time that it was remodeled was in the 1990's and it has not changed since then. The club has exprienced much of its success in the previous years, winning its fifth EPL title last summer with Jose Mourinho as the manager.

Owner Roman Abramovic had previously talked about the possibility to move to a new place but his request was denied by the club. This time, the organization has given Abramovic's proposal a second thought and it seems like they will support him this time.

A preview of the new stadium

The club is looking forward to the change, knowing the benefits it will bring to fans and everyone coming to games and events inside the stadium. The changes to the new venue have taken into consideration input by those that have been at Stamford Bridge.

"Facilities improved for every area" and offer an "outstanding view" from every seat in an arena "designed to create an exciting atmosphere". The statement given by the club also added that it would be easier to get to the Fulham Broadway Station, which would be directly connected to the stadium.

The plan for expansion has been submitted to the London Borough of Hammersmith and Fulham and a decision on weather the plan goes through or not is expected to be given by January 8, 2016. After that, the current stadium would have to be demolished and a new one should go up shortly after in the same grounds.
