The Red Devils were at the receiving end of a 3-0 defeat at the hands of rivals Arsenal last time out and will be hoping to make things right when they face Everton on Saturday. Captain Wayne Rooney who has had a less than impressive campaign so far will have to rise to the occasion if Man United are to respond to their humiliating defeat last time out.

The England captain has managed just a single goal in the league this season which came against Tottenham on the opening day. His form against his former club Everton is even worse with Rooney having failed to score at Goodison Park since 2007.

However his manager Louis Van Gaal has urged his captain to find his scoring boots and improve his tally against their opponents on Saturday.

The United captain has not found the back of net in eight years at the home of his former club and his Dutch boss has urged the England striker to improve his record.

"So maybe against Everton he can change but his average is not so good [against them]. So it's time that he changed that pattern," he said.

"I don't know [why his record is poor]. That you have to ask Wayne but I'm a manager who analyses opponents and gives him advice as to how we can disorganise Everton's defence and then maybe he can score.

"That is what I'm doing, not only for Wayne but all the players, especially from the view of the team tactics rather than the individual tactics."

The Dutch tactician further refused to single out Rooney for criticism who has managed just a single Premier League goal so far this season.

"You cannot answer that because he's part of the team," he said. "He's scored for us in the Champions League. So for me it is not so important who is scoring. We have scored a lot of goals.

"In the beginning your criticism was we don't score goals but now we've scored a lot of goals and you're picking up on an individual player and I don't like that.

"He's our captain so that's very important because his influence is bigger than every other player in our group. He's a very important player for me, his colleagues, everybody."

Everton on the other hand have started their season brightly and are unbeaten in their last five matches. Their good run has kept them in the top half and the toffees will be looking to rise up the table by pulling off an upset at the expense of Man United.

With German midfielder Bastian Schweinsteiger having picked an injury, Morgan Schneiderlin is expected to start in midfield for the Red Devils.
