Argentina’s 2018 World Cup qualifying campaign did not kick off to a dream start as they would have hoped for.
The 2014 runners-up hosted Ecuador in their opening game, but fell to a shock 2-0 defeat, their very first home loss to La Tricolor in La Albiceleste’s history.
However, come Tuesday, Gerardo Martino’s crew will have a great opportunity to make amends to their legions of supporters for Thursday’s defeat, though the road may prove difficult, as they will have to travel to Defensores del Chaco Asuncion to lock horns with Paraguay.
Argentina boast a fantastic record against Ramón Díaz’s men. In 105 meetings with La Albirroja, La Albiceleste have emerged triumphant 59 times, drawing 31 and losing 15.
The two-time World Cup champions are undefeated in their last five games with Paraguay, scoring a whopping 20 goals, with their last defeat coming back in September of 2009.
These two sides’ last clash occurred in this summer’s Copa America tournament in Chile, with Argentina, who lost the final on penalties, thrashing Wednesday’s opponents 6-1 in what was their best performance in recent history.
However, two key players from that win will be missing; Lionel Messi and Sergio Aguero, suffering of a knee ligament injury and a hamstring injury, respectively, with the latter expected to be out for a month.
