Defenders Paddy McNair and Marcos Rojo are out for Manchester United. Liverpool has not been able to keep a clean sheet in the League Cup since 2005.

Manchester United vs Ipswich Town (Old Trafford)

Manchester United will play in the third round of the Capital One Cup against a team that is not planning on making things easy for Louis Van Gaal's side. While the Red Devils have enjoyed a solid start to the Premier League, Ipswich wants to make sure their (Man United) time in this competition does not last too long.

The home side will have to make it without to very important players in their defense. Argentinian Marcos Rojo is dealing with a hamsting injury while McNair seems to be only pulled aside for precautionary meassures. These two are added to Lukw Shaw's existing program.

Now Louis Van Gaal wil really have to make some magic happen in their defense if they want to continue playing as it has up until now, he will have to dig deep in order to find a replacement. The good news is that a player called Phil Jones is expected to play his first game of the season this Wednesday.

Manchester United is the clear favorite in this game, but history in the League Cup against teams that are ranked lower than they are is not too good. The Red Devils have been eliminated eight times by those kind of teams in the past 30 years.

These teams have met only twice in the League Cup and it was Ipswich Town the team to win the last matchup in 1997. You can also expect the visiting side to leave some of their starting players outside the field as their manager has claimed that there will be rotations to the roster done in this game.

14 years have gone by since Ipswich was able to knock out a team that is in the top flight. That time, they took care of business against Manchester City. Their striker David McGoldrick is the League Cup goalscoring leader with four goals up until now.

Liverpool vs Carlisle (Anfield)

What should be another interesting game this weekend in the League Cup will be taking place in Anfield as Liverpool hosts Carlisle for the third time in the League Cup. The Reds have won one game (5-1), and the teams also have one draw between the two sides.

Liverpool has struggled in the past ten years to keep a clean sheet, as they have received 11 goals since then. The last time they left a game without conceding a goal was in 2005 against Watford. They also struggle against teams from a lower tier. Three of their last four eliminations in the third round have come from those kind of teams.

If they want to keep advancing in this year's tournament, they must do it without their captain Jordan Henderson. He just had a succesful surgery on a broken foot and is starting his recovery process.

On the other side, Carlisle will make a game-time decision on wheather David Atkinson plays or not. He has had a hamstring issue that has not necessarily sidelined him for this match. At the same time, they have their leading scorer and the best striker in the fourth division, Jabo Ibehre, ready to go.

It was in 1971, the last time that Carlisle knocked out a team that is on in the top-flight. This is the first time that they make it to the third round as a team from England's fourth-tier.
