Schalke have been poor this season – especially defensively. So how will Felix Magath’s men battle against Olympique Lyonnais on match-day one of the UEFA Champions League?
Both teams are in Group B as Tuesday night sees 16 teams affront each other in 8 fixtures. In France, Schalke and Olympique Lyonnais will provide one of these 8 encounters. Coach Felix Magath has underlined the importance of this UEFA Champions League match ahead of its kick-off as he relishes it.

“Schalke has gone through a lot of changes this season and our recent results demonstrate just that,” the boss told UEFA.com.

“It’s true that it’s been only a few days since we have worked with the entire squad. But, I’m just happy to be playing in a different competition. We are happy to be here, and we are happy to start against the group’s strongest team.”

Indeed, Olympique Lyonnais should certainly be seen as Group B’s favorites although Portugal’s Benfica shouldn’t be written off as contenders while Hapoel Tel-Aviv don’t look as potential challengers for a top two finish. Coach Felix Magath is aware of how tough Tuesday’s UEFA Champions League match against Lyon could prove to be, and more so based on Schalke’s defensive problems.

“For us, it’s a big challenge We’ve conceded six goals in three games,” Magath declared.

“But, I’m sure that our defense will gel. As Manuel Neuer stated, it isn’t only a matter of defense. We will find the solution as a team.

“Olympique Lyonnais are in the same condition in the French league. Perhaps, they haven’t got over last season’s [semi-final] defeat to Bayern Munich.

“However, we will have to look at [Lyon striker] Lisandro closely. Besides, we know that Lyon are strong on home soil.”

How many chances do Schalke have of beating Olympique Lyonnais in the UEFA Champions League on Tuesday night? Will their defense fall prey to Lisandro Lopez and company?
