Although big names arrived at Old Trafford this summer, Van Gaal showed no mercy in shipping out a few high profile players.

Hopes are high for Manchester United this season.

After a turbulent few seasons since legendary coach Sir Alex Ferguson announced his retirement, the Red Devils finished fourth last term, look set to make a return to the Champions League, should they get past Club Brugge, and are ready to mount a title challenge in the English Premier League.

Matteo Darmian, Bastian Schweinsteiger, Morgan Schneiderlin, and Memphis Depay, the new number 7 at Old Trafford, have all arrived, as Louis Van Gaal looks to displace Chelsea and return the club to its glory, glory days.

However, just as big name players joined the Red Devils, a few more left the club in a squad overhaul which saw 14 players leave the club, though many were not of the first team.

The question is, though, which exit might the Dutch tactician regret?

Robin Van Persie: SOLD for £3.84m

Robin van Persie, Fenerbahce, Super Liga

Signed from Arsenal in 2012, many labeled his £22.5m price tag a fee paid to win the English Premier League, as his 26 goals in his debut season saw the Red Devils win the league crown.

However, in the following two campaigns, injury limited him to only 43 appearances and 22 goals. But with the 32-yearold Dutchman gone, Rooney is now the club’s only recognized senior striker.

Should they sign Pedro, though, all will be forgotten.

Di Maria: SOLD for £44.3mAngel Di Maria, PSG, Ligue 1

He was hailed by many as Man United’s next Cristiano Ronaldo, but just less than a year after his £59.7m arrival, Di Maria has left.

He enjoyed a sizzling start, scoring 3 and assisting 3 in four games, but eventually died out, managing 10 assists, adding NO MORE goals.

Nonetheless, the 27-year-old did create the most number of chances among Man United players in the English Premier League, with 51.

Maybe another season would have gone the distance.

Falcao: Left for… nothing?

Radamel Falcao, Chelsea, PSG, International Champions Cup

The Colombian arrived at the Theatre of Dreams on loan, but still cost the club £6m. He made 26 appearances, yet scored only 4 times, so Van Gaal’s reluctance to make the loan a long-term deal was expected.

Cleverley: FREE TRANSFER

Tom went from being compared with Wilshere as England’s most prominent defender, to the punch line of many Man United jokes. Cleverley went out on loan to Aston Villa after Ander Herrera’s arrival all but killed his first team hopes.

Now, he is a Toffees.

Rafael: SOLD for £2.1m

After 169 appearances at Man United, Rafael left the club for Ligue 1. He dropped out of favor ever since Ferguson’s exit. Now, the last of the Man United twins is gone.

With new addition Matteo Darmian set to slot in at right-back, though, not many may remember the Brazilian.

Nani: SOLD for £4.25m

Nani, Fenerbahce, Super Liga

Nani, also tipped as the next Ronaldo (because he is Portuguese and could beat a defender or two with ease) never really lived up to his hype, despite two impressive seasons at the club. He managed 40 goals in seven seasons, so maybe Van Gaal won’t really miss Nani.
