The Argentinean club will try to sign Barcelona's player to play the Club World Cup with them. Los Millonarios won the Copa Libertadores last Wednesday.

Even with La Liga about to start, some of Barcelona's key players are still being followed by a number of teams throughout the world. One of those clubs is Argentinean side River Plate, a team that hopes to sign Javier Mascherano for the upcoming Club World Cup. "El Jefecito" started his professional career with Los Millonarios, before making a move to Brazilian side Corinthians along with Carlos Tévez.

River Plate's president Rodolfo D'Onofrio stated after his side's 3-0 Copa Libertadores victory over Tigres that the team will do "everything in their power" to bring Mascherano back home before th international competition.

"It's up to him. We would be excited to have Javier Mascherano playing for us during th Club World Cup. We are aware that he appreciates the club very much, and we will try to convince him that it's the right move for him to make," D'Onofrio stated.

Mascherano, back in 2003, when he played for River Plate.

Los Millonarios want to add Mascherano to their roster in a similar way rival club Boca Juniors signed striker Carlos Tévez from Juventus. Nevertheless, the player's salary could be a problem, since Argentinean football can't afford large amounts of money to sign a player. Furthermore, Los Blaugranas may decide not to fortify any of their possible opponents next winter, since Luis Enrique's team will also be playing the tournament. As of now, the other team confirmed to play the tournament is Club América, winners of the CONCACAF Champions League.
