Iker Casillas has put an end to his 25-year career at the Santiago Bernabeu. The deal is done. While fans wonder who will replace him, the #GraciasIker hashtag is trending.

The news was announced on Saturday evening as Real Madrid released an official statement on their website. Parts of it read

“Real Madrid FC and Portuguese club FC Porto have agreed on the transfer of Iker Casillas.”

Los Blancos described Spain’s World Cup winning captain as “the best goalkeeper in Spanish and world football history”.

“He [Iker] was our captain and turned into a legend after arriving at the club at only 9. Our club is 113-years-old and Casillas defended it during 25 of those years. During that time, Iker has managed to become one of our greats and has earned the respect, affection and admiration of fans.

Iker Casillas - Real Madrid legend

“Three Champions League titles, one Club World Cup title, two Intercontinental titles, two UEFA Supercups, five Spanish Primera Division titles, two Copa del Rey trophies and four Supercopa de Espana titles with Real Madrid as well as one World Cup and two European Championship crowns with the Spanish national team form an important part of his legacy. And he achieved much more! The Zamora trophy, the Bravo Trophy and he was elected five times as the world’s best goalkeeper.

“The full list is impressive and endless, but mostly it is a pride and an honor for Real Madrid. Iker is gone, but his example remains. His behavior during the 725 matches played with our shirt shows the way forward to those who dream of being part of this team.

“Thanks, Iker, for everything you have done. Thanks for being a symbol of the best in our history. You are gone but we will never forget that you forever belong in the heart of Real Madrid.”

According to reports, the legendary Spanish goalie will earn £140,000-a-week at FC Porto.
