Not even a men's game had this many viewers in a single network. The numbers are compared to World Series and NBA finals ratings

The United States Women's National Team made history by lifting their third World Cup trophy and the first one since 1999. It was a milestone in the history of women's soccer, but also the FOX Network had a reason to celebrate as there was a record number of viewers that tuned in for the final game of the Women's World Cup.

The viewership of this game in the United States broke even the record set by the men's team in the United States vs Belgium game from last summer's World Cup. That time, it was ESPN who had the broadcasting right of the competition for the American audience.

When the game kicked off at 7:00 pm ET, there were already 17 million viewers across the country watching. 60 minutes later that number rose to 21.86 million An amount that can even be compared to the most recent NBA Final and the MLB World Series, two sports with a very strong audience in the U.S.

When all the goals had already been scored, and the moment in which the United States would life their third trophy, the number of viewers kept increasing to 22.86. This was almost three times as much as the number of people that watched the 2011 final between the same teams (8.6 m).

Telemundo was the network in charge of broadcasting the game for Hispanic viewers. There were also English-speaking viewers that preferred to see the game in this language just to hear Andres Cantor shout GOOOOOOL seven times during the game. NBC's sister affiliate set its own WWC record with 1.27 million viewers.

There were comments from some viewers that felt this game was even more exciting that a men's game due to the fact that players are not looking to get a call from the referees and their game is even deemed as faster than some of the games we witnessed in Brazil.
