This is a section with no contender from South America or Africa – two zones which have produced FIFA U-20 World winners on several occasions. That sounds like good news for European champions Germany who are both Group F and overall tournament favourites.
The Germans’ best years in the history of this youth competition were in the 80’s. Oceania should give them good memories. It was on the soil of New Zealand’s neighbours, Australia, that they won their first and only title up to date.
With the current success of German football in both Men’s and Women’s Football, one would expect this current crop of players to dominate Group F and go all the way to the top. The other team in the table likely of putting in a great challenge is Uzbekistan.
They failed to pass the First Round in UAE 2003 and Egypt 2009 but recorded a remarkable improvement in Turkey 2013 with a quarter-final finish. New Zealand 2015 marks Uzbekistan’s fourth participation at the FIFA U-20 World Cup. It didn’t happen without drama and sweat, though, as they reached the Round of 16 as the second best ranked team among the six third-placed teams. They then clinched a convincing 3-1 victory over Greece but the French were a mountain too big to climb in the Last 8. Uzbekistan collapsed 4-0.
At the 2015 FIFA U-20 World Cup, they will begin their campaign against Honduras in Christchurch. By the time the referee will blow up the whistle in their final group stage match against Fiji, the White Wolves will be hoping to have booked tickets for the next phase.
