Their abysmal recent run has pushed the Magpies down to 17th place and a defeat on Sunday could result in them being demoted to the Championship. Newcastle have now gone ten matches without a victory and if they are condemned to a similar fate on Sunday, Hull City could take advantage of it and ensure their stay in England's top tier league.
Both the clubs were involved in a relegation battle back in the 2008-2009 season when a 1-0 defeat at the hands of Aston Villa resulted in Newcastle being relegated.
Jonas Gutierrez who was part of that squad is keen to ensure that his team does not face a drop.
"It's the most important game I have to play in seven years," Gutierrez said.
"The good thing is that we play at home and it's in our hands. A few players here know what it's like to go down, and it's not nice for the city, the players and the club.
"We need to move forward to the next game, and do it for the fans and the city."
The Argentinean has also hinted that it might be his last game for Newcastle but asserted that he will do everything in his power to ensure that Newcastle remain in the Premier League.
"I know this could be my last game at St James' Park," he added.
"Since I have recovered from my illness, I have always said the same thing. I want to help the team and work hard.
"I've been improving all the weeks since I arrived. I feel stronger and feel I can play 90 minutes. Two months ago, I didn't know I was going to be able to [play].
"I feel strong. I think the same - help the team. Most of all, we have to do it for the fans and the city, because they don't deserve to be in this situation. We are the players, and we have to take responsibility."
Both teams suffered defeats last time out with similar score lines with Newcastle at the receiving end of a 2-1 defeat at the hands of QPR. Whereas West Ham lost to Everton in a home encounter.
West Ham are poised to be without James Collins (calf), whereas Guy Demel is also a doubt for the match. Kevin Nolan who missed West Ham's last outing against Everton due to personal reasons might return to the side. Massadio Haidara (knee) and Siem de Jong (thigh) on the other hand are doubtful for Newcastle.
