Both played for Santos in Brazil. He won three World Cups and scored over 1,000 goals in his career.

Many have tried to reach his legendary status, Ronaldo was close, Ronaldinho probably got even closer. Edison Arantes do Nascimento “Pele” claimed not even Neymar Jr. could reach his status in Brazil’s football history.

In his long-lived career, Pelé scored 77 goals playing for the national team. Ronaldo retired with 66 but Romario believes that the current Barcelona striker could surpass his mark. Pele highly doubts it.

“It think to be the new king, the new Pele, is impossible. Because my mother and my father closed the machine,” O Rei said.

He never played in Europe, but combining his time with Santos, Brazil and the New York Cosmos, Pele tallied over 1,000 goals throughout his career. Pele thinks he could still compete against today’s greatest without a doubt.

“The thing that people forget is that I was given a gift to play football, this is something no-one can judge,” Pele said. “If you would ask, would Beethoven be important now, of course.”

Today, Pele works as an unofficial ambassador of Brazilian football around the world. He does admit that Neymar has talent and will continue to grow and develop throughout the years.

“I think he’s a good player, an excellent young player and he’s going to be a big star no doubt.”

Pele was obviously devastated with how things worked for Brazil in the recent World Cup. The 74-year-old legend is hopeful about La Canarinha’s future now that Dunga returned to the hot seat.

“I think Dunga has a different style to Felipe (Scolari), more defensive but I believe in Dunga.”
