Two historic teams will meet against each other during the UEFA Europa League's Round of 32 on Thursday, when Inter visit Scotland to face Celtic. With both clubs living different realities, Inter hopes they can turn around their up and coming season against the green-and-white side, who have actually enjoyed a good run in their domestic championship after the Europa League group stage ended.
This will be the fourth time both teams meet in a European competition. The first one happened in 1967, when Celtic defeated Inter in the final match of the European Cup (now known as UEFA Champions League). Their next pairing came in 1972, with both games ending with a 0-0 score, leading to a penalty shootout that saw Inter progress.
The Hoops hope they can live up to their amazing record while playing European games at Celtic Park, where they have not drawn a single match in their last fifteen outings (Ten victories and five losses). But when it comes to Italian sides, things change. Ronny Delia's men will try to end a seven game run without a win against any Italian opponent, equalizing just two games and losing five. Celtic reached the knockout stages after finishing second in Group D, just behind Red Bull Salzburg.
Inter's season seems to be going down the drain even after a coaching change. Roberto Mancini has bee trying to relive his previous glory, but he seems nowhere near of motivating his players. Even with winter signings Lukas Podolski and Xherdan Shaqiri, the Neroazzurri have struggled finding their form, and currently hold the ninth spot in Serie A's standings. When it comes to European tournaments, Mancini's men are undergoing a good luck streak, with four games undefeated in the ongoing competition (two wins and two draws). However, their task on Thursday will be one for the ages, since they will attempt to win their first game ever playing in Scotland.
