UEFA Europa League champions Atletico Madrid will battle against UEFA Champions League victors Inter Milan in the UEFA Super Cup on August 27. Prolific Uruguay striker Diego Forlan has emphasized the need for his Madrid club to record a ‘historic’ victory against last season’s treble winners from Italy.

Diego Forlan of Atletico Madrid smiles as he lifts the UEFA Europa League trophy. On their way to the Europa League glory, Atletico Madrid controversially saw out giants Liverpool who was then coached by Rafael Benitez. Now the Spanish outfit will once again come up against a side managed by Rafa – this time, it will be Inter Milan.

The Nerazzurri just enjoyed their best moment in terms of cup success last season. Led by Jose Mourinho (who is now in charge of Atletico Madrid’s local rivals Real Madrid), Inter Milan historically knocked out Pep Guardiola’s “invincible” Barcelona as they went all the way to lift the 2010 UEFA Champions League trophy at the Santiago Bernabeu.

Besides this prestigious honor, Inter Milan also scooped the Italian Seria A and the Coppa Italia Nazionale to claim the treble in a fashionable manner. The Nerazzurri are arguably the best side in Europe at the moment although many had complaints against the defensive style they applied at times last season. The fact is that the continent’s three greatest trophies are in the club’s cabinet which now awaits another title: the UEFA Super Cup.

But Atletico Madrid aren’t willing to succumb to the Italian champions like they did against Sevilla in the final of the 2009/2010 Spanish Copa del Rey. Play maker Diego Forlan assessed things ahead of the UEFA Super Cup encounter during an interview with Italian magazine La Gazzetta dello Sport. He declared:

“Inter Milan will be difficult challengers. Atletico Madrid's Diego Forlan celebrates with his team mates. But, we want to win because it would be a historic victory for the team. Inter are champions of everything, but we are a team experiencing progression.”

Indeed, how many people would have predicted that the red and white side of Madrid would be celebrating the achievement of silverware at the end of the 2009/10 season, whereas fans and players of the richest club of the Spanish capital – Real Madrid – would be bowing their heads after conceding defeat to Barcelona in La Liga, to Lyon in the Champions League, and to minnows Alcorcon in the Copa del Rey?

Atletico Madrid performed with unity and courage throughout their UEFA Europa League campaign besides having luck on their side. However, Diego Forlan certainly stood out as their main man at the centre of success. Following his good performances with Atletico Madrid like with Uruguay during the 2010 FIFA World Cup in South Africa, Diego Forlan has attracted clubs to lure him out of Spain.

Inter Milan are reportedly showing interest to sign the striker. Actually, Diego Forlan will surely have more opportunity to shine at the highest level and thus receive more accolades should he join the treble winners. However, these possibilities have no impact on the player who is concentrating on nothing else but beating Inter Milan come August 28. Diego Forlan explained:

“I don’t think about individual prizes. The team comes first, then me… and the first goal is victory.”
