Ayew was inconsolable after AFCON 2015 defeat

Ghana's Andre Ayew leads nation in mourning as Ivory Coast steal away AFCON 2015 trophy

February 9, 2015 By Mutembei Kevin
After his country lost the 2015 AFCON final to Ivory Coast, winger Andre 'dede' Ayew was caught up in a tearfully emotional display, and could not be consoled... not even by opposite coach Herve Renard.

Rarely has losing a match seemed to hurt a player so much, but Ghana's Andre Ayew was a literal pool of tears on Sunday 8th Feb after being defeated by Ivory Coast at the Estadio de Bata in Eq. Guinea.

After losing the Africa Cup of Nations Final to Ivory Coast through a tense penalty shootout on the day, Ayew could not help but sob openly, his country having failed to end their sensational 33-year-long trophy drought in a tournament many fans fancied them to win.

Ayew was in tears as he received his runners up medal on Feb 8th:

So much so that Ivory Coast coach Herve Renard had to try and comfort the forward:

The last time Ghana won the AFCON was in 1982. In the 1992 edition of the competition, Ghana had faced off against the same opponents they had to in 2015 and could not the better of Ivory Coast even back then. Abedi Ayew Pele, dede’s father, was in the 92’ Black Stars squad that lost to the Elephants.

Could this have been the reason young Ayew was so grief-stricken? That he could not undo his old man’s failure from 23 years ago?

Fans of African football took to Twitter to express their views about Ayew’s plight:
