After a sloppy start to AFCON 2015, the Black Stars of Ghana are back on the rise and look like genuine trophy contenders. Is 2015 the year for Avram Grant’s men?

The Ghana team we saw at the opening stage of the 2015 Africa Cup of Nations group stage looks radically different from the team we have seen in their recent two games. The Ghanaians faced Senegal in their first game and looked like they were set to grab all three points against their formidable opponents after going ahead through Andre Ayew early on.

However, Senegal were able to net an equalizer, and Ghana, instead of mastering a reaction that could enable them to get back in front, looked comfortable to sit back and close out the game with a point. This was a grave mistake on Ghana’s part, and they learnt this the hard way when Senegal conjured what was literally a last gasp winner in extra time.

The Black Stars are however a more confident, clinical and organized side now, having overcome their opening game blues and put Algeria and South Africa to the sword. The key to their revival? A man named Asamoah Gyan.

The reintroduction of Gyan into Ghana’s starting roster after the Senegal disaster was all the inspiration the Black Stars needed to win two tough games on the bounce and cruise into the CAN 2015 last eight with a glorious six points in the bag.

Nonetheless, in Guinea, the Stars have a tough opponent that is well capable of making life hard for any opponent. This is a lesson learnt the hard way by fellow African giants Ivory Coast, who had to settle for a point when they drew 1-1 against the Guineans in their first group stage game. Ghana will hope their main man Gyan can once again provide the magic needed to overcome the fellow West Africans.
