CAN 2015: Mali's Team Profile

AFCON 2015: Mali's Squad list, Qualifying recap, History

January 13, 2015 By Mutembei Kevin
Any opponent that tries to peg Mali for an average performer at AFCON 2015 will be doing so at their own peril. The stage is set for The Eagles to fly in Bata this year.

It was the opening game of the 2010 Africa Cup of Nations in Luanda. Hosts Angola had managed to work their way into a comfortable 4-0 lead against Mali only for The Eagles to crawl their way back to a 4-4 draw, recording one of the greatest upsets in the history of the competition. If Mali can summon the spirit of 2010 in their 9th AFCON appearance this year, they will definitely be formidable to play against. Their #10 ranking in Africa and 49th worldwide according to the latest official FIFA statistics is further testament to the heights The Eagles are capable of soaring to.

How Mali qualified for the 2015 Africa Cup of Nations

Mali's route to the CAN this year began on a high note. Two back to back victories over Malawi and Ethiopia gave The Eagles 6 of the 9 points of their second-placed finish from Group B. A sensational Seydou-Keita-inspired 2-0 victory over Group B winners and number-one-ranked Algeria meant that the two second-leg defeats against Ethiopia and Malawi would not derail them from appearing at this year's showdown.
