Ivory Coast are another team that will feel that they should have won more trophies from their numerous AFCON qualifications. Can they hold off the likes of Algeria and Cameroon?

It would have been almost an atrocity for the Elephants of West Africa not to have won the CAN trophy at least once from their 19 appearances in the competition, but they made sure this wasn’t the case by bagging it in 1992. Though missing the inspiration of talismanic forward and captain Didier Drogba, the team still retains their main spine in the form of fiery forwards Salomon Kalou, Wilfried Bony and Yao Gervinho, midfield enforcer Yaya Toure, and experienced defender Kolo Toure. The Elephants are ranked #3 in Africa and #28 on the world list.

How Ivory Coast qualified for the 2015 Africa Cup of Nations

The route to AFCON 2015 for Ivory Coast began with a 2-1 victory over Sierra Leone on 6th September 2015. This was followed by a morale-sapping 4-1 thrashing by Cameroon, which was quickly balmed by victory over DRC. Their return match against Sierra Leone was nothing short of a goal fest, with the Elephants putting 5 goals past their opponents away from home. Ultimately, they had to settle for a second-placed finish as a stellar Cameroon team won Group D.

Ivory Coast will miss the leadership of Didier Drogba, who retired in 2014

Ivory Coast's top players to watch

Ivory Coast do not have to look any further than Yaya Toure for a new leader who can inspire them the same way Didier Drogba used to. Few midfielders in Africa and even on the world stage boast a similar collection of fantastic attributes to the ones the big man has, and the Elephants could certainly use these qualities. Equally adept at attacking as he is at defending, Toure will provide a unique midfield dynamism for the Elephants and is the man other teams need to keep an eye on at this year's CAN.

Midfield enforcer Yaya Toure will be tasked with providing the magic for The Elephants at AFCON 2015
