CAN 2015: South Africa's Team Profile

AFCON 2015: South Africa's Squad list, Qualifying recap, History

January 10, 2015 By Mutembei Kevin
Bafana Bafana are another team from whom considerably a lot is expected at this year's AFCON. Having named an enthusiastic Ephraim 'Shakes' Mashaba as coach and streamlined the management of the country's football in 2014, the stage is set for South Africa to make a huge impression in Africa's premier international football tournament.

1996 Africa Cup of Nations Winners South Africa have made 8 appearances in the competition, the first coming in the same year they clinched the trophy. As per the new rankings released by FIFA on January 8th, 2015, Bafana are the 12th best team in Africa. On the world list, they feature at #52.

How South Africa qualified for the 2015 Africa Cup of Nations

Two well taken goals by forward Tokelo Rantie and midfielder Thulani Serero at the Moses Mabhida Stadium against Sudan on 15th November, 2014 were enough to send South Africa through to CAN 2015. This is only the second time they have qualified for the tournament since 2008. Their hard-earned draw with heavyweights Nigeria effectively dumped the latter out of the competition and gave Bafana a crucial point in the race for qualification.
