The north London side are plotting a swoop for this German duo, as Wenger looks to strengthen his squad in January.

The January transfer window is in full swing, and given Arsene Wenger’s promise to the Arsenal fans to strengthen his squad during this period, rumors regarding new signings for the north London side have been on the high.

The latest report suggests that the Gunners are keen on bringing in a defender and a midfielder in order to reinvigorate their push for a top-four finish, with Wenger identifying two Borussia Dortmund stars as ideal recruits.

According to Mirror Sport, Le Prof is plotting a sensational £51m swoop for both Jurgen Klopp’s star center-back Mats Hummels and influential midfielder Ilkay Gundogan.

The rumors linking Arsenal to Hummels will most probably please the club’s supporters, who have been calling out for a world class defender. However, the same cannot be said for Gundogan.

Despite being an undeniable talent, who can run the midfield whilst putting in a defensive showing, most Arsenal fans have been pressuring Wenger to move for a defensive midfielder in January, not another central midfielder.

The FA Cup holders have been linked with moves for Sporting Lisbon’s William Carvalho and Southampton’s Morgan Schneiderlin, but whether Wenger will actually push for the Portuguese and French midfielder remains unknown.

In the meanwhile, Arsenal will have to rely on Mathieu Flamini and Francis Coquelin to shield the club’s frail defense, with Mikel Arteta still out with a calf injury.

On the bright side though, Wenger could be welcoming Mesut Ozil and Aaron Ramsey back to the squad on Sunday after revealing that both midfielders are in contention for this weekend’s Emirates Stadium clash with Stoke City.
