After training with them for three months, sources indicate Louis Van Gaal's team will sign former Barcelona keeper Victor Valdes for the next 18 months.

According to sources, Manchester United would have decided to give Victor Valdes a chance to join the team for good. Having trained with them for almost three months, the free agent will join the Red Devils as a backup for his fellow Spaniard David De Gea.

Valdes was the subject of several rumors ever since his supposed deal with Monaco fell apart due to health issues. The former Barcelona shot-stopper came down with an injury in March, which prevented him of making the 23-man squad for Spain in last year's World Cup. After undergoing surgery, the player failed his medical tests with Monaco, giving the team the option of breaking the two-year deal between the parts.

Valdes started training with Manchester United in October, but this decision was taken mostly by Louis Van Gaal, who knew the goalie from his years as Barcelona's coach. Despite training at Old Trafford, the Catalunyan keeper was sought out by several teams, including Liverpool, Arsenal, and Mexican club Queretaro, but apparently the Spaniard decided to assume a substitute role with Van Gaal's outfit.

The Dutch manager's intention with Valdes' signing will try to bring competition to David De Gea, who has played every single official match for the Red Devils this season. Backup goalie Anders Lindegaard has not enjoyed a single minute on the pitch, and would be willing to leave the team so that Valdes can take his place.

Valdes won six domestic titles, three Champions Leagues and also lifted the Copa del Rey two times. The goalkeeper also won the World Cup with Spain in 2010 and the European Championship two years later.
