To add insult to injury, the Swiss giants took to social media to taunt the Merseyside club after knocking the Reds out of the competition.

As if crashing out of the Champions League in front of their own supporters wasn't bad enough, Liverpool were further taunted by Basel on Instagram after the 1-1 draw at Anfield.

Needing to grab a win in order to make the round of 16, the Merseyside club only managed to share points with the Swiss as a disappointing performance from the English Premier League giants means their run on the European stage will continue in the Europa League.

Basel, on the other hand, who qualified for the next stage in second place thanks to the tie at Anfield, were in a joyous mood after Tuesday's game, and felt like taking to social media to express their delight at beating Liverpool to the last qualifying spot.

Unfortunately for Brendan Rodgers' side, this came at their expense.

Basel, who have constantly upset English clubs in European competition, beating Chelsea both home and away in the Champions League last season after dumping north London side Tottenham out of the Europa Leauge in the quarter-final stage the year before, took aim at Liverpool's famous “You Will Never Walk Alone” song with this post on Instagram.

To make things even worse, Twitter jumped on the bandwagon, continuously trolling the Reds after the final whistle.
