Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger revealed that the English midfielder has suffered ligament damage after coming down with an injury in Saturday's 2-1 loss to Manchester United.

Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger reveals that Jack Wilshere could be looking at a lengthy spell on the sidelines after coming down with an injury in the Gunners' 2-1 loss to Manchester United, on Saturday.

Stating that the English midfielder has suffered ligament damage, the long-serving French manager pointed out that the knock on the 23-year-old star's ankle could keep him away from the first-team squad for week, despite claiming that the seriousness of the injury is still yet unknown.

Shinning for his national team during the latest international break, Wilshere could require ankle surgery, which according to the Daily Mail, could rule out the Three Lions ace for up to four months.

"It does not look good," Wenger said, as Arsenal gear up for Wednesday's Champions League clash with Borussia Dortmund, at the Emirates Stadium.

"There is no bone damage but there is ligament damage. It is just how [long] it is, which we should know next week.

"It is so sad because he just came back and had found his mobility. I hope it will not be surgery, just in a boot, but it will be a few weeks."

The injury, a result of a bad tackle from Red Devils youngster Paddy McNair, could rob the north London side of anther creative talent, with German playmaker Mesut Ozil still out of action with a knee injury, as the club's injury crisis deepens.

However, Wenger refused to blame Wilshere's injury as a “desire to hurt” from McNair, instead blaming the ill-timed foul as a rookie mistake from the 19-year-old Manchester United player.

"The tackle caught him from the side, just when he had moved the ball a bit forwards too much," Le Prof continued on to say.

"Then, when he dived to make the pass, McNair came in to make the tackle and took him from the back and the side. When you see the picture, it is very bad.

"I don't think it was a tackle with the desire to hurt. I think he went for the ball but it was a late tackle; a tackle which a young player can do. It was a bad foul."
