The Argentinian was left without a nomination in favor of Mexican wingman Carlos Vela, Diego Costa and Real Madrid's Cristiano Ronaldo, the league's top scorer.

Despite scoring more goals than two of the nominees, Lionel Messi was snubbed by La Liga for the Best Striker award for the 2013-2014 season.

Messi scored 28 goals last year, one more than Atletico's Diego Costa (now with Chelsea) and a shocking 12 more than the other nominee, Mexican Carlos Vela, who plays for Real Sociedad. It would have been fair for Messi to get a nomination, since he was just three goals short of matching Cristiano Ronaldo's total of 31, earning him the Pichichi trophy. It seems that word about Messi's lack of shape last year cost him his seat among those considered the league's top scorers.

This was not the way Messi had planned to celebrate his 10 year anniversary playing for Barcelona. Furthermore, his dad's words to a local radio station where he left a window open for a possible retirement away from Camp Nou.

Jorge Messi, the striker's father, assured the superstar holds a special place in his heart for his hometown team, Newell's Old Boys, hinting he may consider a possible retirement in his homecountry:

"He loves Barca, but life can take many turns. You never know...he loves Rosario, Newell's and the city, it became his home. Life takes many turns," Messi's father explained.
