The Real Madrid star has blasted rumors claiming the 29-year-old played an influential role in the former Portugal national team coach's departure

Real Madrid star has publicly denied rumor that he played a part in the sacking of former Portugal coach Paulo Bento, who left his position as national team boss after the Portuguese football federation decided to terminate his contract.

After an abysmal World Cup tournament, and a unbelievable 1-0 loss to Albania in a Euro 2016 qualifier, the 45-year-old boss was replaced Fernando Santos, but according to Ronaldo, that decision was fully made by the president of the football federation.

"I am not going to answer, it's not worth it," Ronaldo stated. "These situations should be put to one side.

"I prefer to stick with the positive things about the coaches that I've had over my career, from the start, with [Laszlo] Boloni, until now, with Carlo Ancelotti and Fernando Santos.

"I've always had good lessons from my coaches and I've learned from them. In football there are cycles and that of Paulo Bento ended in sadness for us.

"Over the past 11 years decisions have been made over the head coach of the national team and they are always taken by the president, never a player or group of players.

"The talk otherwise makes me sad, I'm disappointed."

Cristiano Ronaldo, Paulo Bento, Portugal

The Blancos star, who has had a wonderful start to La Liga, scoring 13 goals in seven games, was involved in an injury scare after being seen with an icepack on his knee in Portugal's friendly with France, on Saturday, but the 29-year-old has assured the fans not to worry.

"I've had a great start to the season, I'm better than ever, but I'm not going to rest on my laurels," the former Manchester United star claimed. "It's a long season, there's the Champions League, La Liga, the national team... a lot of things to fight for",

"My goal is to be in the top three. I'm not worried about that, I don't lose sleep over the Ballon d'Or. The captains and coaches have time to vote. I'm not a hypocrite, I'd like to win it, but I'm not the one who decides."
