Despite the injury to Mesut Ozil, and the German's poor form, the Gunners boss remains adamant that opting against re-signing the Spaniard was the right call

Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger has again defended his decision not to re-sign former Arsenal captain and star playmaker Cesc Fabregas.

The Spaniard, who spent eight unforgettable years with the north London side, departed the Emirates back in 2011 for Barcelona, spending three seasons with his boyhood club.

But after growing frustrated with his time at Camp Nou, the 27-year-old made the decision to return to the English Premier League. However, Le Prof, who had first refusal on Fabregas, opted against moving for the midfielder, citing the creative options already at his disposal as the reason behind his decision.

La Furia Roja ace eventually moved to west London where he joined Jose Mourinho's Chelsea side on a reported £30m fee, and has been a hit with the Blues ever since, registering a remarkable seven assists so far.

"I don't regret not taking Cesc because we already had a lot of creative players in our midfield," the French manager told BeIN Sports.

"Chelsea will also have a difficult period [in the season]. Our schedule was extremely difficult and I have the belief that we can close the gap to them."

Le Prof gave a positive update on the fitness of 28-year-old attacker Olivier Giroud, who was ruled out until January of 2015 due to a foot injury, revealing that the former Montpellier star is ahead of schedule on the road to recovery.

"Olivier Giroud is recovering very well," Wenger added. "I believe he is ahead of schedule in terms of rehabilitation. The operation went perfectly.”

Although many believe the French striker will compete with summer signing Danny Welbeck for a spot in the starting XI when he makes his return to the pitch, the 64-year-old boss argues the two can play together, stating:

"Welbeck also played on one side for Manchester United. Welbeck played in the same team with [Wayne] Rooney and [Robin] van Persie. He can play down the sides."
