Benfica returns to Champions League football, after falling in a penalty shootout in the Europa League Final. Watch live on TV & Online as Zenit looks to continue their fine form this season under AVB.

Champions League football returns to the Estádio da Luz in Lisbon, four months after Real Madrid raised La Decima in the Portuguese capital. In their first match of Group C, Benfica and Zenit St. Petersburg will lock horns in a clash that will bring together many familiar faces.

Benfica has been in good form since the start of the season, having won three and drawn one from four domestic league matches.

Their latest triumph came on Friday when they traveled to the Estádio do Bonfim to take on V. Setúbal, coming away with an emphatic 0-5 victory. Three goals from Anderson Talisca helped the Águias seal three more points, giving them plenty of confidence ahead of today’s European match.

The Russian outfit will certainly pose a much bigger threat than Setúbal did, and the will also bring to town three former Benfica players.

Axel Witsel, Javi Garcia and Ezequiel Garay all played a part at the Portuguese club, and all three actually enjoyed great success in Lisbon. They quickly became fan favorites, and they will likely receive a warm reception.

Benfica will want to prove to their former employees that they are the better side, and claiming three points would be a step in the right direction. They will lean on the talent of Nicolas Gaitan and Eduardo Salvio, while the experience of Luisão and Lima could also play a big part.

Jorge Jesus will also call on Greek international Andreas Samaris, who could make his Champions League debut with the Portuguese Champions.

A trip to Lisbon will not have been André Villas-Boas’ first choice, but the Portuguese manager returns to his home country knowing that earning points away from home will be vital for his side to progress.

“It’s a privilege to return to Portugal to take on one of the best teams in our league,” AVB said in his press conference at the Estádio da Luz.

“Our ambition is to win. The group will be difficult, therefore earning points away from home will be important. The fact of returning home or to your former home stadium should only be a motivating factor, opposed to a distraction. We will not prepare our squad to play for the draw. That would be a big mistake on our part,” he added.

Zenit has enjoyed a stellar start to the domestic campaign, winning all seven of their matches, which has them at the top of the table. Their closest opponent is Spartak Moscow, who are already six points back. With those 21 points, AVB’s squad has scored 21 goals, while only conceding four. That puts them at an average of three goals per match in the domestic league, something they will want to carry over into European Football.

These two sides have met twice before, with the home side coming out on top.

Zenit defeated Benfica at home 3-2 in the 2011/12 UCL campaign, but then the Portuguese side came out on top in Lisbon, winning 2-0, knocking out the Russians.
