Who are the 2014-15 Serie A season promoted teams?

Livorno were the only team from Serie B who were not able to make their stay in Italy’s top flight a longer one, as they were relegated alongside Bologna and Catania. On the other hand, their other two Serie B counterparts, Sassuolo and Verona managed to secure their spots in Serie A for the upcoming season.

On a positive note, three teams—Palermo, Empoli, and Cesena, none of whom are strangers to the top level—will make their returns to Serie A after finishing first, second, and winning the playoffs respectively. Calcio fans will especially be quite familiar with the Rosanero’s eccentric president, Maurizio Zamparini, who is well known for firing and re-hiring coaches and expect him to do so this season as well.

In summary, here are the changes for the 2014-2015 Serie A campaign:

-Promoted: Palermo, Empoli, Cesena

-Relegated: Catania, Bologna, Livorno

Who will play in the 2014-15 UEFA Champions League?

Although they used to be allocated four, Serie A now only earns a total of three Champions League spot after giving up their last spot to Germany’s Bundesliga. As a result, just like France’s Ligue 1, two teams gain automatic entry and the third will have to fight it out through the qualifying rounds with the goal of earning their place in the group stages.

This season, reigning champions Juventus, who became the first Italian side to break the 100-points-per-season barrier, will be appearing in the Champions League and will hope to do better than last season that saw them dumped out during the group stages. Roma, after failing to make the Champions League since the 2010-2011 season, will return after finishing in second thanks to one of their best domestic campaigns to date.

And Napoli, who were unfortunate to become the first side to earn 12 points in the Champions League group stage yet failed to make it out, will hope to have another shot at Europe’s premier competition by successfully getting through their play-off qualifiers.

1.    Juventus – 102 points

2.    Roma – 85 points

3.    Napoli – 78 points

Who will play in the 2014-15 UEFA Europa League?

Italy will have three participants in the Europa League, but there was some controversy surrounding one of their participants. Despite finishing in sixth, Parma will not feature due to financial issues, namely overdue tax debts and as a result, their play-off spot was given to Torino. Fiorentina’s fourth placed finish will see them gain an automatic spot and 2010 Champions League winners Inter will be Italy’s second side to be participating in the play-off rounds.

Who were last season’s domestic cup winners?

Despite having one of their most successful domestic campaigns in their history, Roma were unable to keep pace with Juventus, who, once they hit full stride, raced to their third straight Scudetto title. In doing so, they also boasted the best defense with just 23 goals conceded and the strongest attack with 80 goals scored.

Supercoppa Italiana champions: TBD, between Juventus and Napoli on December 23, 2014

Coppa Italia champions: Napoli – From Naples, Italy.

Italian Serie A Champions: Juventus – From Turin, Italy.

What are the biggest managerial changes?

Italian football is notorious for its managerial merry go round. By far, the biggest changes are the managerial shake-ups at both Juventus and Milan, with the biggest shock of the summer being Antonio Conte’s abrupt resignation after three successful seasons with the Bianconeri. The former midfielder has been replaced by Massmiliano Allegri, who himself was sacked midway through Milan’s dismal campaign last season.

The Rossoneri have also undergone some changes, with Allegri’s replacement, Clarence Seedorf, being dismissed to allow his former teammate, Filippo Inzaghi to take over on the tactician’s bench. Long-time Lazio coach Edy Reja also resigned with Stefano Pioli being appointed as his replacement, and Udinese saw long-serving coach Francesco Guidolin move into a technical director position as former Inter boss Andrea Stramaccioni took over.

Finally, Czech tactician Zdenek Zeman—no stranger to Serie A followers—is now the new coach of Cagliari, after Ivo Pulga was fired.
