Mexico’s backup goalkeeper at the World Cup believes things might start turning around for Cruz Azul this week against Queretaro.

After some of Cruz Azul’s board members suggested executing fines against their players, or even sacking their coach, Luis Fernando Tena, team leader and captain Jesus Corona backed up his coach, asking the fans to be patient with the man:

“I think it would be a drastic move to make. We have one of the greatest coaches in Mexico; he can be the one who ends those seventeen years without a championship for this team. We still have time to get where we want to be. Every member of this team is working as a unit and I think that will be the driving force to change the recent results,” Corona told the press.

Corona understands how Cruz Azul owners must feel given the latest results (losing against Chorrillo FC at CONCACAF Champions League) but he considers making those moves would be even harmful:

“It’s pretty obvious that, when things don’t go the way you’ve planned, pressure starts piling up on you. Maybe we have made some bad decisions on the pitch, but you have to keep your head up, be prepared, and try not to make the same mistakes again,” the keeper added.

Tena defended his players’ performance, stating any fine would be too harsh on the team. Corona thanked his coach for it, establishing a commitment with his coach:

“We are grateful with him for being so supportive, we will try to back him up with good performances on the pitch, there’s nothing else we can do,” he said.

Cruz Azul will host Queretaro at Azul Stadium this Saturday.
